Pros: It sort of worked when it worked Cons: It's dead! Other Thoughts: The 5 GHz band was never reliable. The distance was very limited on that band, and it dropped connections all the time.

So during the life of the router I was stuck using the 2.4 GHz band. The 2.4 GHz band was reliable, but there were a few times during the 2 years that I owned this router where it dropped connections and the router had to be restarted. Other than that it worked well. But I was surprised when I woke up this morning to send an email and had no connection. After debugging the problem I discovered that the router simply died for an unknown reason. I tried all sorts of trouble shooting but the device will simply not power on.

Now I'm stuck having to purchase another new router. I wish I could find something that would support todays demands that is as reliable as the old WRT-54G! Obladi oblada life goes on bra. Pros: This is essentially a WNDR3800 in a white case.

It has 16MB of flash and 128MB of RAM, much more than most versions of the very closely related WNDR3700. This makes it extremely versatile for OpenWRT or DD-WRT installations, which give this router phenomenal capabilities. Having 5GHz wireless N means no interference in a crowded neighborhood full of 2.4GHz signals (from countless access points to microwaves and cordless phones). Gigabit networking for the wired lines is great. I've had it a year and a half - it's rock solid. Other Thoughts: This is my main router and firewall (I've disabled the firewall on my cable-modem and set it to pass-through). I have numerous systems internally on the gigabit network connections and wirelessly on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios (18 devices currently active) and this device is dead idle with a 0.03 load-average with 107MB of the 128MB of RAM free.

I have an older WNDR3700 with a failed WAN port acting as a bridge to my media-center (PS3, media-center computer, son's computer and a Roku all connected) via 5GHz wireless N (40MHz wide channel) which maintains a consistent 240Mbit/s-300Mbit/s connection to this device, so it's faster than the 100Mbit connection I used to have when I had a wire-feed from a WRT54GL (even taking the half-duplex nature of WiFi into account), with the bonus of no wires. Pros: Powerful router for the price VERY compatible with OpenWRT Cons: Not very good if you don't know what you are doing.

Factory firmware is buggy. Other Thoughts: I bought this unit at a garage sale for $5, and I would say it is money well spent.

It did not work very well when I got it, but I had deduced that it was not the hardware, rather it was the software. I also found the factory firmware to be somewhat lacking.

It was hard to find, but I located the OpenWRT image for this router. After installing OpenWRT, all of the router's issues were resolved, so this is a NEEDED upgrade for this router. Besides, why not run OpenWRT on a router with 16mb of flash and a usb port, as well as 64mb ram? Pros: I had this for about three months now.

I tested all the functions and works well. I really like the content filtering by keyword blocking. Very nice feature if you have children.

Right now I only use this as a router/firewall with the wireless turned off. I have another WD-N750 running on OpenWrt as my AP.

Cons: I wish I can block with the MAC address. Other Thoughts: I bought this for $49 with a $20 rebate. I figured I can't go wrong for that prices and I was right. I wouldn't spend more than 50 on a router these days.

Netgear Wndr3700 Firmware Update

I considered loading DD-WRT or OpenWRT but decided against it since the stock firmware seems to be stable and has all the features I need. Pros: Price and price alone Cons: It's a netgear. I feel as I've wasted my money yet again, tempted by a what would be perceived as a great price.

I've had sever Netgear wireless routers and switches over the years and they never seem to be rock solid, rather they are flaky, sometimes working fine for a short time. This WNDRMACv2 is no different, great price and just over 90 days later the signal has gone to @#$. I get better signal strength from my neighbors, regardless of channel, and power settings. Never buying Netgear again, have an RMA in process. I hope the replacement is OK.

Other Thoughts: Regardless of price, stay away from Netgear! As an IT professional, I fully understand the configuration and troubleshooting efforts required to implement a home or business router, wifi access point, etc. I have a 5 year old Buffalo router back in place and doing it's job very well until the replacement comes from RMA.

If it had a GB switch on it I would leave it and sell the RMA.
