In 2013, we enabled using instant messaging, presence, and audio calling right from your contact list. I’m happy to say that we’ve now taken the next step by adding video calling between Lync 2013 and the latest Skype for Windows desktop client, available for download.
Now Lync users can conduct everyday business and collaboration “face-to-face” with customers, partners and suppliers who use Skype. The screenshot above shows a video call from the Lync perspective.

The best of both What’s not obvious from the screenshots is the work we’ve done in the underlying media stack to enable the connectivity. Lync and Skype have always delivered phenomenal voice and video experiences to business and consumer users across a wide range of environments and network conditions. Now, we’re taking the best of both to make both even better. This includes built-in security, with enterprise class encryption of both media and signaling using TLS and SRTP, enabled by default. It includes connectivity, with standards-based traversal of personal and corporate firewalls using STUN, TURN and ICE. It includes high quality, scalable video using the industry standard H.264 SVC codec.
Finally, it includes the SILK audio codec as the default choice for Lync to Skype calls. SILK is used for billions of minutes of audio calls every day, and provides a phenomenal balance between audio quality, bandwidth utilization and power consumption. The includes instructions for both Lync Online and Lync Server 2013 customers to enable the capability, and the shows how to add contacts and make calls. The video calling requires an up-to-date Lync 2013 client on either Android, iOS or Windows. It works today with the latest Skype for Windows desktop client only, and requires that the Skype user sign in with their Microsoft account.
What’s next As excited as we are about this, we know we have more work to do. We will extend support to the Skype clients on additional platforms, starting with Android and iOS in the coming months. We will add support for SkypeIDs and make it easier to find and add contacts from the worldwide Skype directory when the next version of Lync becomes in the first half of 2015. These planned improvements to Lync Skype connectivity are just one example of how Skype for Business will keep and improve on all of the capabilities of Lync.

On this page, you can learn how to make and receive a video call in Skype for Business.You can make face-to-face video calls with your contacts. All you need is a camera and your computer’s speakers and microphone. You can also use a headset if your computer doesn’t have a built-in audio device.
Start a video call. Open Skype for Business, and either find a contact in your Contacts list or type a name in the search box to find the person you’re looking for. Point to the contact’s picture, and click the Video icon.
An alert pops up on your contact’s screen, which they can use to accept or ignore your request. If the video call is accepted, the conversation window expands to display the video. Use the views and controls, such as mute/unmute, as needed. For details about controls and views, see the following section. At any time, you can do any of the following:. To end the call, close the window, or click the hang up button. To stop showing your video, point to the camera icon, and click End Video.
The audio will continue. You can also add video to an existing instant messaging (IM) conversation.
Simply click the camera icon in the window to start your video. Use video controls and views In the conversation window, choose a view by clicking Pick a Layout and then clicking any of the following:. Gallery View to show all of the participants’ videos (if you have more than two people). Speaker View to show the presenter’s video or photo at the lower-right corner of the meeting window, plus meeting content. Content View to show only the meeting content. Compact view to show the tiles of the participants’ photos in a compact window. To control call participants, in the conversation window, right-click someone’s video or photo, and then click any of the following:.
Mute, Unmute, or Remove to mute, unmute, or remove that person from the call. Lock the Video Spotlight to turn off video/photo of everyone other than the person who is talking. To see videos or photos in a separate window, click Pop out the video gallery, and then click either:. Full Screen View, for a large view of the videos or photos. Pop in people region to go back to normal view.
